inspect a cat grader

We offer tips on what to look for when inspecting a Caterpillar 140G motor grader.

Produced between 1974 and 1996, the Caterpillar 140G is an exceptionally hard-wearing, durable grader. It’s an ideal choice if you’re looking to invest in a reliable workhorse at a reasonable price. However, it’s vital to inspect any pre-used grader before choosing to purchase it.

Steering

With the grader’s engine running, turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and right.

Any alarming or loud noises could indicate problems with the cushion valve, which can lead to steering failure.

Hydraulics

Check the grader’s hydraulics for excessive wear and tear, damage to the rods and pins or leakage.

Look for an excess of loose play between the stirrup arms and hydraulic cylinders as the grader is raised or lowered.

The circle

The circle takes a lot of strain when grading so make sure it’s thoroughly checked for damage or malfunction.

Look for excessive play on the gears, crank and linkage during motion. Also, look for cracks or weld repairs on the circle or the A-frame.

Mouldboard

Inspect the top and bottom of the mouldboard for damage. The side rails at the top should be free of impact damage.

Make sure all the bolts are in place. If there’s less than 13 cm of cutting edge, the mouldboard should be replaced.

Alignment

Inspect the overall stance of the grader to make sure the frame is not leaning to one side.

Measure the distance between the tandems and the rear wheels to check consistency.

If the front and back of the grader aren’t aligned, there could be a bent or loose articulation point.

Front wheels

Both front wheels should turn easily when the front end is raised at least 15 cm.

There should be no extra play in the radius arms either.

To check the axle pivot, push down on one wheel. The axle should move freely but not bounce.
