A reliable motor grader is one of the most valuable pieces of machinery a farmer can own. South African farmers rely on gravel roads to get around their farmlands, and these roads need constant maintenance, otherwise, there is the risk of areas becoming inaccessible.

Owning a grader allows farmers to do this maintenance themselves. But graders aren’t just a one-trick pony. They can also be used for cleaning and sloping ditches, building terraces and levelling the ground before foundations are laid for new structures.

What to look for in a motor grader

There are a few essential qualities that your motor grader must have to be a worthwhile investment.

A motor grader can do a lot for your farm. However, if the initial cost is exorbitant, it won’t be justifiable. Consider looking at second-hand or reconditioned motor graders.

A motor grader that’s always breaking down is worse than having no motor grader at all. Only consider reliable and well-known brands that have a good reputation.

Graders are hardworking machines, taking on tough jobs for hours on end in rough conditions. The grader you choose needs to be able to handle the strain.

Similarly, a motor grader that doesn’t have a long life expectancy is no good. For such a significant investment, you need a grader that’s going to be functional for many years.

All graders will eventually need a service or parts replacement. Go for a make of grader that is well known so that service centres and replacement parts aren’t hard to find.

After-sales support

After buying a motor grader, it’s normal to need advice and support, especially if you’ve never owned a grader before.

Second-hand graders aren’t likely to come with a warranty, so if you want the peace of mind that comes with having one, it’s better to opt for either a new or properly rebuilt grader.

Caterpillar motor graders

Caterpillar has a long history of building reliable and hard-working motor graders.

The 140G was first put into production in 1974, and more than 25,000 were produced until 1996 when the 140H rolled into production.

Both models are world-renowned for their longevity and dependability. There are still plenty of 140Gs and 140Hs in good working condition today.

More recently, the 140K was introduced as the replacement for the 140H.

The 140K introduced a range of technological innovations that boosted productivity. It retains the durability and reliability of the older models, but with the bonus of more modern technology. This includes more advanced mechanics and hydraulics.

Rebuilt Caterpillar graders from KH Plant

A brand new motor grader is very expensive. Second-hand graders are a lot cheaper but come with a high level of risk. They may malfunction due to damage and have short life spans.

Rebuilt motor graders bridge the gap. Reconditioned graders are a fraction of the price of new ones. Because they have been rebuilt from the frame up and come with full warranties, they perform and last like new machines.

At KH Plant, we specialise in restoring Caterpillar 140G140H and 140K motor graders and components to as-new condition. Contact us for more information or to discuss your needs.
